Hello, Fellow Scholars!

Americans are pretty naive when it comes to education. "Education has the highest ideals, right? We train teachers through colleges and universities, right? They use well-written textbooks and thoughtful, honorable materials, right? All teachers love and respect each child they shepherd, giving unbiased attention to American ideals and values, right?"

The answers, my dear fellow parents, teachers, and educators, will shock and surprise you, because most often they amount to "NO!"

I have been a teacher, instructor, tutor, and professor for over four decades, and I have witnessed unbelievable changes in what people have expected and experienced in Academia.

This blog is going to cover a lot of educational dirt that has been swept under various people's rugs. I will not necessarily tackle this house-cleaning in any sort of chronological order. I will pray for guidance from the Lord I have striven to honor in all of my academic endeavors for the wisdom to impart facts and learned opinions. You are free to disagree with my opinions, but facts are facts. The stories I will tell are absolutely true; they happened to me or to someone I know very well. Nothing will be reported third-hand or in a manner that is either carping or bitter.

My teaching career has evidently come to a formal halt, but the Lord has inspired me to pass on some crucial information to those who are actively engaged in the ongoing process of education. May you ponder, learn, and react with the knowledge I pass to you.

            It’s been a year since I wrote Part One of this series of reflections on effective teaching. I really didn’t intend that such a length of time to intervene; it simply happened, and I won’t waste time reporting on what transpired. I will simply continue on this and other topics in this blog. The Philosophy of Teaching

The philosophy of the school room in one generation will be the philosophy of government in the next. ~ Abraham Lincoln I grew up in Catholic schools, elementary and high school (there were no junior high or middle schools in the Catholic parochial system when I was young). I generally loved school in all of its seasons. Despite modern-day rumors and half-truths, the nuns who taught me were not abusive to me or to any of my classmates. Yes, children got well-deserved punishments for bad behavior, but no one ever complained in my hearing that the punishments were arbitrary or outlandish; everyone knew better. I have photographic proof that our school was completely and fairly integrated; in fact, I was smitten with a young mulatto boy in first grade, and proudly boasted to my racist grandmother that I intended to marry him one day. The Field of Woke

              Great balls of fire! Just the other day, Smith College, the largest of the “Seven Sisters” colleges – and open exclusively to “cis, trans, and nonbinary women ” – has flexed its intellectual muscles in an area to which it believes it is entitled. Recently, the Department of Field Education became – by an act of magical decree – the Department of Practicum. Now this department refers specifically to social work – roughly the work that people do “in the field of living.” Why on earth would a supposedly-serious institute of higher learning do such a foolish thing as to ban this word?             The rationale behind this bizarre move has something to do with – what else? – slavery (i.e., racism – that “scourge of American society”). Here’s how their thread – and it is barely a thread – of logic goes: Slaves were present in America from the 1600’s. They worked in fields , without pay, so naturally the ancestors of those slaves are highly incensed – more like outraged
